Reviewing "Creativity and English Language Teaching" Book by Alan Maley and Tamas Kiss

By: Aqilla Ayusandra Literature in ELT (B)         Creativity and English Language Teaching book by Alan Maley and Tamas Kiss provide an overview of how to be a creative person and teacher while teaching. This book itself is divided into four parts and each part discusses different things such as how to analyze and discusses general creativity theory, define the key characteristics of the creative teacher, goes on to offer practical suggestions for becoming a more creative person, suggests the pre-conditions and frameworks for classroom application, etc. The writer reviewed it because creativity is so widely regarded as a desirable thing to have in virtually every field.

If we move to “Chapter 4; Creativity and Applied Linguistics”, we will enter the specific sphere of linguistic creativity like the relevance of applied linguistics (AL) inquiry and the description of the practical application of these findings to teaching. It is undeniable that a deeper knowledge of how creativity manifests itself in a language is beneficial if it enhances awareness of the genuine nature of the phenomenon. Meanwhile in “Chapter 8: Becoming a Creative Person”, this chapter suggests some possible ways of awakening and sustaining a more creative mindset as a person. This chapter also claims in order to become a more creative teacher, it’s necessary to become a more creatively oriented individual and also needs to show what that means in our own daily life, like simply applying a collection of creative activities in class unless the whole atmosphere of the class is favorable towards creative ways of doing and thinking.
