Poetry’s Role in Teaching/Learning English
Most people believe that poetry can only be discovered in a dusty old book or something that is only learned at school. However, poetry may be found in a wide range of aspects of daily life because poetry has the power and can help us to see the ‘new side of the world’ in unexpected ways. I argued that poetry not only helps us to understand the whole world. From my own personal perspective, poetry has several ways to teach or learn with. According to Carter & Long (1996), and Lazar (1993), Literary genres such as poetry, essays, stories, drama, fiction, etc are highly recommended in enhancing people who want to learn or teach English as well as understand social happenings and issues.
For me, poetry is one of the most effective ways of teaching or learning English. Many people learn poetry from books or songs to enhance their English, especially their vocabulary skills such as idioms, a lot of slang, and figurative language to understand language in a variety of situations and literature as the art of communication. The use of poetry itself can allow us to freely express our opinion that link to our particular experiences which can create trust and empathy while teaching or learning English in daily life.
